FAQ
I WAS
HURT WHILE WORKING FOR THE UNIVERSITY...
Who Pays My Medical Bills?
The University provides full medical coverage for employees injured on the
job under our Workers' Compensation Insurance. This coverage applies to
faculty, classified staff, professional exempt staff, student employees,
and even administrators.
The supervisor is responsible for reporting
an injury that occurs when an individual is hurt while "within the course
and scope of their employment" this generally means while one is "on the
clock" doing their job. Of course, there are individuals whose work is not
all done within the confines of the campus, which is why we expect the
supervisor to make the report they can best determine if the injury was
work related. Our small size creates a number of situations where
individuals self report, but there have been a number of recent cases in
which the supervisor was not informed of the injury. In order for the
Insurance to provide coverage, the injured employee must be treated or
evaluated by the designated medical provider contracted under the program. FAILURE TO UTILIZE THE DESIGNATED MEDICAL PROVIDER COULD RESULT IN DENIAL
OF BENEFITS.
How Does an Injury Get Reported?
The procedure is simple: call (719) 262-3111 (Public Safety) to report the
injury (9-911 if the injury is life threatening severe bleeding,
unconsciousness, etc.); an officer will be dispatched to take a formal
report, investigate the accident/incident, and make a referral to the
designated medical provider. FAILURE TO FILE AN INJURY REPORT IN A TIMELY
MANNER COULD RESULT IN DELAY OR DENIAL OF BENEFITS.
What If about an Emergency?
CALL 9-911, GET EMERGENCY TREATMENT AS REQUIRED AND
REPORT THE ACCIDENT TO PUBLIC SAFETY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. A
parallel call to (719) 262-3111 will get the paperwork moving sooner medical
treatment is more critical than the paperwork, but the paperwork is
required to initiate insurance coverage.
What If I Am off Campus?
If it is an emergency, see above. If not, call (719) 262-3111 to report the
injury. If you report that you are off campus, in most cases, an officer
will be able to take a telephone report and make the medical referral.
What If it is after Hours?
If you routinely work outside the M F 8 a.m 5 p.m. Workweek, you or your
supervisor should know the appropriate procedure if not, contact Risk
Management to discuss it.
What If I Get Treatment Outside the Designated
Medical Provider Administration?
Your supervisor needs to be informed ASAP. Report the injury to (719) 262-3111
ASAP. Your supervisor should contact me to determine the appropriate
follow up steps.
What about non Employee Injuries?
All injuries on campus (with the exception of non emergency
intercollegiate athletic injuries) should be reported to Public Safety
(719) 262-3111 for investigation and follow up of potentially hazardous
conditions. Injuries should be reported ASAP so the responding officer can
evaluate conditions present WHEN THE INJURY
OCCURRED.
